Sam has reached nine months and should be giving her husband the news any time that her water broke. I remember the panic that those words sent me into as a young soon to be father. Getting everything together, making calls, driving as careful as I could, trying to be patient while being so excited. What a great time in our lives is the birth of a child, especially that first one! I tell people it's like winning the grand prize. I can't wait to see the baby and create it's first portrait! What a tremendous blessing it is for all of us.

There is just something special to a boy about cars. We name them give them a gender, buff and polish them, treat them like one of the family and hold them in a special place in our heart for the rest of our lives. Kinda weird huh? Well that's the way that we are created for some reason. Well that brings me to Zach. I'm sure if you ask him he didn't really care about whether he had his portrait made with the car or not but as he grows older he will find that connection with some type of car that he will cherish for the rest of his life.

Can you guess how old she is? ..... given the clue, she's five, of course this opens up a whole new world, especially being a big sister and all. We just need to be clear on the fact that shes five, you know she can do things herself now, she doesn't need your help any more, after all that's for her little sister right? Don't you wish they never grew up? One day she Will be holding up both hands telling you shes TEN ( The glory in that of course is that it's double digits, then comes Thirteen which is way cool because now she's a teen and knows everything. Afterwards it's fifteen with the drivers permit and sweet sixteen comes way to soon and she's getting her drivers licence. That's about the time they can't figure out that you were a teen once and actually know something about it. Well it all happens way to fast for any of us parents. All we can do is have portraits created of them at each stage of their lives before the moment leaves us and is gone forever. One day your are holding them in your arms and they are helpless and the next your are letting them go and you are helpless. The bible says "children are a blessing from the Lord". This is one of the great truths that God shares with us in his word. What a blessing to know that we can personally be changed by his grace and at the same time trust him with the outcome of the lives of the souls he has entrusted to us, our children. And yes as I write this I think of my own children and what a blessing they are to me. Typing and holding back tears all at the same time. I guess it's all part of the job.

Dispelling the common myths surrounding High School Senior Portraits

Myth#1 – Your senior portraits must be purchased from the yearbook photographer studio.

Truth #1 - Attention Seniors and Parents! You can select the studio of your choice for your senior portraits! If you live in Jacksonville, Orange Park, Middleburg, Callahan, Fernandina Beach, or Yulee you do not have to go to the contract photographer for your senior portraits! The school would have you to believe that they have chosen the photographer for you and you can only go to that studio. This is simply not true. The catch is that if you want to be in the yearbook (which everyone does) then you have to complete the yearbook session through the school photographer. BUT THAT'S ALL! You can then choose to have formal, casual or personality portraits made at the studio of your choice.

Myth#2 – "Fashionable Photographers" Some of the studios that the local schools have chosen from advertise that their photographers are "Fashionable"

Truth #2 - Did you know that the yearbook photography studio hires high school students to take pictures of your son or daughter? At a portrait studio such as Shutterly Perfect you don’t get a "photographer". You get a Portrait Artist, someone that is not only creative but trained in all disciplines of photography including posing, lighting, exposure, lens choice, camera angels, style, subject evaluation, formatting and processing to name a few. Not just a little training and then pointing and pushing a button.

Myth #3 - Your session won't take that long.

Truth #3 - At other studios this does have a partial truth – you won’t be in their studio very long for them to take 6-8 pictures of your son or daughter. It's the three hour wait to get in that will take a long time. By the time you get in to see the senior high senior photographer your irritated, tired, somewhat putt-off, no longer fresh. Don’t you think that will affect how you feel about your final prints? At Shutterly Perfect you will have a scheduled time just for you to have your portraits created. No wait in line, no hassle. It’s your time to be spoiled. Change your clothes, change your hairstyle, get photographed with your best friend, sibling, pet, instrument, car, truck, sports attire or favorite things! You may choose between four studio rooms including outdoor and maybe even a second location. So, it will take some time to create your portraits, but your time is spent with you in front of the camera, and not waiting in line for the person in front of you to finish their session.

MYTH #4 - It only cost $_____ this is a famous ploy of large senior school studios. The initial cost may not seem like much, but you will be charged for EVERY little thing. including glass glare removal, tan lines mole/scare on 1 image $80, add an outside location $50, add a friend $75, add a pose to a package $25, highlight special effect per pose (colorize) $45, name per pose $45, softening per pose $45, and on and on.

Truth #4 - At Shutterly Perfect Portraiture, you will know what to expect without any hidden add-on charges! You receive Color, B&W, Sepia, Pt Effects, Graphic FX, Text and more as part of your original images.

Myth #5 – The contract photographer must have a parent-friendly proofing system since the school hired them.

Truth #5 – With one contract studio in particular, the proofing process is explained as you are booking your session, but not everyone reads the fine print which says:
You will receive a proofing folio in the mail after your senior session from which to choose your senior portraits.
You have 15 days to review the portfolio and choose your images
If you keep the folio past the 15 days, the credit card that you used to book your session will be charged $179 for the folio
If you do not want the folio, it will STILL cost you money, because YOU are responsible for making the trip to return the folio, or paying for a traceable delivery like FEDEX to make sure that you are not charged the $179 for the folio that you never wanted in the first place!
Your student is authorized to place orders on your credit card without your consent. What!?
If you do not agree to these terms, YOU CANNOT SCHEDULE YOUR SESSION
If you stop by to schedule your session, you will be seated at a computer with internet access, so that they capture your credit card number AND your authorization that allows them to force the folio sale on you and your student.
At Shutterly Perfect, you will naturally want to purchase the amazing images of your son or daughter. You will NEVER be disrespected with a forced purchase.

Myth #6 – The contract photographer must produce quality work since the school contracted with them, and they give my son or daughter’s senior portraits the individual attention they deserve.

Truth #6 – One contract photographer in the Northeast Florida/Southeast Georgia area has a contract with 112 schools. YES that is one hundred and twelve schools. The only way one studio can handle that kind of volume is to “batch process” the images. Skin softening is applied to everyone, causing the skin to have an un-natural ‘plastic’ look. The images on their website, in their marketing materials, and hanging in their studio are impressive, but remember they are showing work used for marketing, not what they produce for you!

By the time you leave the contract photographer’s studio…
You will wonder why you spent your hard earned money to have another student photograph your son or daughter.
You will wonder why you paid $300-$700 for JUST YOUR SESSION and NO PRINTS.
You will be dismayed at your experience, and you will wonder why you had to spend just as much as you would with an independent portrait artist, and in the end you will have an inferior ‘cookie cutter’ product.
When it is all over with, you will realize that they only wanted your money and not to build a lasting relationship with you. Shutterly Perfect would like the opportunity to create a beautiful family portrait for you before your senior leaves for college, record the event of their life at their wedding, and be with them in their journey as they start a family by bringing their first baby into the world.
Last but defiantly not least. You will wonder why there was a "tip jar" on their counter. Are you kidding me?!? a tip jar?

"Brothers" Both at 2yrs Old

Jared and Judson are brothers but have very different personalities, that's part of the glorious work of the Lord to take two people and create through them children who are also individuals with their own temperaments and personalities. LeAnna is my oldest and since she and her younger sister helped me paint the section of wall for 2010 Seniors she thought it would be cool to have some portraits on it. This is where we flew into action, borrowed a flat iron and went to work on the hair. One of our new senior props is a 1956 Chevy Bel Air pictured below. This is my son Joshua posing with it so I could blog it before senior season gets here.
As you can see it makes for some really cool images. Josh is only 13 but he is tall enough to be a senior high student. You wont get this at Cady & Cady. Custom portraiture is our specialty at Shutterly Perfect. If you know anyone graduating in 2010 send them our way. They don't have to go to their school photographer for all their portraits, only the one for the yearbook.

Christy and Erik can produce some cute babies! Here are a sample of their son's Easter portraits. It looks like he enjoyed the feel of the bunny but it was the ducks that really caught his attention. I could barley get him to look at me once we introduced the pretty yellow quacking twins. Well, we all got a laugh at watching his reaction especially when "Fredword" (my kids name the ducks and bunny every year) looked at Wyatt and gave him a harmless nibble right on his bottom lip! I thought he was going to come out of the little barrel he was in but he had a great recovery! and we went on with the shoot.

I'm not sure if the ducks knew exactly what was going on but then again it didn't look like Mason had any idea either. OK. It would appear that I'm great with kids and can get them to do just about anything...but that is not entirely so as you can tell by looking at the second picture in this series. I have absolutely no power over how they react to live animals! Well at least I've been at this long enough to know to do some portraits of the child before introducing the bunny, that way mom doesn't go home empty handed. We can still capture the innocence of your beautiful child in a portrait and maybe by giving them a bunny make some memorable images in a different sort of way! Whichever it's all a part of who we are as people... created in the image of GOD. Lets remember that although the bunnies and ducks are cute, Easter is about the savior who offers us hope for our sinful souls. From one hungry beggar to another, let me point you to the one who is the bread of life. Jesus Christ.

Clara Renee Acree was born on February 19th, 2009 at 1:42pm to the blessed parents Winnie & Alan Acree. She weighed in at 6lbs and 5oz and measured 19 inches. Most people are great to work with but some just go way beyond! I couldn't wait to post this image and got on it right after Diana left from her session this morning. The reason I say all of this is because I would like to extend a very special Thank You to Diana. I have had the plane you see in the portrait for about 12 years and it was just not a pretty color. After inquiring about it Diana ask if she could take it home with her and refinish it. I couldn't say yes fast enough, and you can see the result, it's absolutely gorgeous. I am very appreciative. I was recently honored and awarded with the 2008 Marjorie Sharp Award for Excellence in Photographic Craftsmanship in the Northeast Florida Region. The Professional Photographers Society of North Florida (PPSNF) holds two print competitions per year and the entrant with the highest accumulative point total for the year receives the award. Their quiver is not yet full! Dan & Christy have another child on the way so I wish to congratulate them on their fifth. It was one of those subtle hints dropped about their portrait for next year having another subject in it. So, I'm a little slow but eventually catch on to the clue giving and figure out what they are telling me. I couldn't be happier for them they are a wonderful family and if you look closely you will see a resemblance in them all. I'm sure that number five will not disappoint. All of their children are a happy mixture of the two of them.

OK...So if you know me by now you know I have several "Favorite" clients and this is one of them. Doesn't it look like she will do anything I ask her to do? Well that's because she will. Her mother ask if I would come to live with them and shocked I ask why? The response was "because she will do anything you ask her to" well I was floored and responded "she isn't that compliant at home?" with the answer being not at all! How could a little girl with a face like that not be a perfect little angel all of the time? I'm not sure but I have to believe it's true. I'm just glad she will do what I ask her to do, it sure make for great portraits.

Do you ever wonder what really goes on in the studio? Here is a little glimpse of what happens in between the beautiful portraits that we create... a mugging! Yes sometimes I get mugged right in the middle of the shoot. I am just another toy for some kids to play with! All of the sound effects can get the children going and all the jumping doesn't seem to calm them down a bit either. Well as you can see it's really more about the fun than the portraits... at least to us kids. By the way this is not my good side, this is my outside, my good side is the INside! And yes we did create some beautiful portraits also.

Posted are a couple of family portraits from a recent session of the Brown family. They are the owners of Certified Collision on the corner of Cassatt & Astral just south of Normandy Blvd. What a busy family. I don't believe the bad economy has stopped anyone from crashing their car, this family's business hasn't seen a downturn. Maybe it because of the quality work they do. My Firstborn "Leanna"

Let me take a moment to introduce you to my three. (Artist rights I guess)

My first born "LeAnna". Although she takes after me allot in mannerisms and likes, she gets her beauty and height from her mother. LeAnna is an intelligent and beautiful girl. She has always been known for her "Breck Girl" hair. She turned 15 in late Oct and is studying to get her drivers permit. She is a tremendous blessing from the LORD to our family. Her hearts desire is to fear God and keep his commandments. She is a devoted friend and is sure about her path in life. She loves anything football and especially enjoyes watching the Gators play since Tim Tebow has joined the team. We all admire the fact that he was homeschooled and has the testamony that he loves Christ as we do. LeAnna is becoming woman right before my eyes and one day not so far in the future I will be giving her away to another man (How hard will that be!?!) Oy, the tears.

My Second Born "Joshua"

The best way to describe Joshua is the term "Full Throttle". We believe he Will probably be a Navy Seal or something like that. He has a very high tolerance to pain and if it has wheels on it he will have it moving as fast as it can go within just a few minutes. He turned thirteen in June and man is he tall! He gets his math skills from me but gets his height from his mothers side of the family. He is known for his long eyelashes and every time he gets his hair cut somewhere new the girl has to make a comment about how beautiful they are. Josh is a handsome young man and I can't wait to see him grow up to see how he turns out. We are currently training him in righteousness and trying to instill in him the value of self control so that when he starts to drive the world will be a safe place to live.

Rebeka will be twelve this coming January. The phrase "Great Things Come In Small Packages" comes to mind when I think of her. She definitely gets her height from me! We will be short together. She is the sweetest girl, and check out those green eyes and the signature "upper lip mole". She is our "Girly-Girl". Give her some nail polish and she will be busy for hours. She is a tender young woman who is very conscious of others feelings. She puts others first and easily fits into any group. Her desire is to please the Lord and to obey his commands and it shows in her everyday life. I usually get two different good night hugs from her just because she has more than enough love to go around.

Jose is one of my best friends. He fears God and keeps his commandments. I admire him for his walk with the LORD and his dedication to his vocation. He was recently promoted to plane captain and flies the Navy's P3 Orion aircraft. He has just returned from a six month tour to Japan. I believe the most I could ever pull off in blogging would be once a day. I'm not sure if that's even remotely possible but I think I am going to try for the month of December (don't hold me to it). Kendra & Robert were married this past November 22, 2008 in Glen St. Mary's Manntowne Congregational Holiness Church. As you can see one of Jacksonville's premiere wedding photographers was on the scene to capture the event! These stunning images were created by our own portrait artist Scott Beahan of Shutterly Perfect Portraiture located in Jacksonville Florida. Although the event was small (under 100 guest) the brides main concern was to have beautiful images to remember it by. Choosing the right photographer to capture the event was the utmost importance to the bride, not just someone who could take a picture, but a person who feels it for the art it is. They are so little when they first come home from the hospitial. Isn't she so cute you could just hug her up. Ahh and that new baby smell!

Joanna & Jackson Engagement at the Beach

Well the morning started a little rough for us all but as you can see the results are great.

Here's the whole story-I contact Joanna & Jackson at our meeting time of 6:45 am and they were running about 15 min late, (not a catastrophe). They get to the park and I give them their early entry passes and we drive to the the gate. Well the pricing just doubled since I had been there two weeks ago and I only had 5 tickets and needed six. After about 10 minutes of groveling and begging and explaining that I was just one ticket short the poor man finally has mercy on me and lets us in. (Don't tell anyone) (Oh yeah and the sunrise is growing closer). We head down the road only to find that the gate is locked! (should have been opened at 6am). We talk about what would be best to do then I jet off to find someone to open the gate. We get the gate opened and rush down to the beach to find the sun peeking above the horizon then fly into a frenzy of creating portraits. I can't remember the last time I worked so fast. We get the sunrise portraits done and the rest praise God was cake! I can't say enough about Joanna & Jackson, they were great to be with and had a can-do attitude. Their story started at 3am this morning. I am relaying only my version of the day.

Anyway, I photographed Joanna's sister Misty's wedding six years ago and have had a great re pore with the family ever since. I met Jackson today, what a great guy, Joanna nabbed him up before anyone else could get him! They make a great couple, and fantastic portraits! Don't they just go together!?

Melissa & Elih Engagement

What a terrible morning as far as weather goes! Melissa & Elih came in from Tallahassee to have sunrise pictures for their engagement session and what do you know, rain. Do you know how often it rains in the morning here in Jacksonville? Not often, it just had to land on our day. Despite the odds we dodged in and out of the rain to create some beautiful portraits (even though no sunrise). You can definitely tell these two are in love, the weather didn't even phase them, they had a great time just being together on the beach.

It doesn't take much to be cute, just a pair of beautiful blue eyes, blond hair, and a set of denim overalls. Oh yeah! a little streak of mischievousness doesn't hurt the portrait either. These images from one of Jacksonville's premier children's photographer Shutterly Perfect show just how much fun you can have in just a matter of minutes. Steffani is an extremely talented and artistic person. She plays the harp, violin, piano, and I'm not sure what else! To be able to show some one's artistic side through my artistry of portraiture was a great challenge for for me. We had a great time together that day. Her harp is an antique and I saw a "shark fin" in it so we laid it (carefully) on it's side and shot an image that I added a little bit of post camera artistry to and came up with the first shot posted here entitled "Shallow Water". I thought it was "way cool". She defiantly has the only senior session here in Jacksonville with a "shark" in it.

Sometimes you have to take a minute! I like to try to enjoy the little things in God's creation as well as the big ones. Have you ever tried to photograph a Lady Bug? Don't try this at home! What a challenge but how rewarding. We all love them..there so cute and red and have tiny little antenna's. Here are a few of the images I created while enjoying the visit! While visiting St. George Island FL this past August I had the privilege of visiting with Morgan & Alan Pellum and their new little boy. I photographed their wedding here in Jacksonville in May of 2005 and since then they have moved to Kentucky and had this "little" bundle of joy. I was delighted to create these images for them and hope they will bring them even more joy when they look back after the years and see he is not so little any more. I also look forward to photographing their next child! No I don't have any information that you don't. I just have the feeling that Morgan and Alan love being parents and why stop at one? I'm just guessing that there will be more to come! Maybe a girl this time.......no rush.

Mallory & Blake were married on July 26th but not without incident!
The night before at about three in the morning Blake's car was stolen out of his driveway along with his uniform, shoes, cell phone, and other belongings that he would need on his wedding day. After a mad dash of shopping "on the wedding day" he arrived and put it all behind him and was ready too make the commitment of a lifetime. Nothing would keep him from marrying the girl of his dreams on that day, not even the pending afternoon thunder storm which threatened their outdoor wedding. Well sure enough it rolled in before the wedding so what did Blake do? Stripped off his jacket rolled up his sleeves and along with the other willing participants dried off 150 guest chairs and moved them to higher ground. The rain stopped, the bride was beautiful, the groom was smiling, and the wedding went on! The Power of Love!

Recent Beach Seminar

A little while ago I taught a seminar on beach portraiture lighting & posing. Instead of the usual family of four with blond hair & khaki pants I decided to step it up a notch and provide something unusual. How about stepping back in time to the Renaissance period and shooting a woman and her horse! The first picture shows me giving instructions to our model "Jordan". Do those shorts make my butt look big? and yes I have my hat on backwards! The second portrait was shot in the studio the day before when we had Jordan's costume fitting. I just loved the emerald green against her skin. The jewelry was custom made by one of my clients at The Beaded Empress.

Our most recent senior "Brandon" is a senior at Trinity Christian Academy. As you can see he is into allot of different activities, everything from marching band to dirt bike racing. There were a few other themes to his senior session as well. We shot images of him and his dog, marching band outfit, casual wear, tuxedo, fire red truck, motorcycle, as well as images in between. Well Kelley from Kelley's Bloom Room showed her style in the area of the wedding accessories. The Flowers were once again breathtaking! The brides bouquet displayed a realm of beautiful colors made from natural flowers, displayed against Christy's wedding gown the bouquet was the finishing piece to the brides ensemble. Natural flowers placed in an arrangement by a skillful hand are an expression of beauty that can only be upstaged by the bride herself. Great Job Kelley! You helped to make the wedding beautiful!

This image is from their engagement portrait session which we photographed at the Jacksonville Zoo. I have been impressed with the Zoos new attractions. When I first moved to Jacksonville the zoo was a fence with animals in it, but look at it now! I am shooting engagement portraits there! I have photographed two of Blakes siblings weddings in the past and look forward to seeing them both at the wedding. Do you live in St. Johns County and desire professional portraiture? I took a spin past the World Golf Village this past Thursday to photograph Trip, Tracey and their two girls at their home. Usually coming to Jacksonville for their photography Tracey opted for a home session this time. Capturing a beautiful portrait of a family can literally mean having fun! With most of the family portraits created we ask the girls to play ring around the rosie. Trip & Tracey watched on and spent some time reflecting on how fast their little girls are growing up. Photographing them from the time they each were babies I can only testify to how fast time passes myself.
Trip is the owner of Barber & Associates a commercial roofing company. If you would like to see some of his work just come by the studio and check out our roof, it makes the whole studio look good. I highly recommend his services, they are very professional and efficient. What a joy to go to someones home and create a portrait that they will cherish forever.

Well I've been privileged to be a part of Andrews life for a few years now. I photographed his family portrait in Ponte Vedra a couple of years ago and now his senior portraits. What an outstanding young man. He is currently suffering from a tumor in his pituitary gland and covets your prayers. He is handling it with such a strong faith in Christ that it is humbling to be around him. It will definitely cause you to check up how you are living yourself. Katy's third child and second girl will be arriving soon as you can see in her maternity portrait. he is filled with excitement and I think it shows in her image, she has that expectant mothers glow about her. Having a maternity portrait is a great way to tell the story of how it was being pregnant. It takes all of the good and bad and puts into a beautiful portrait where you cant seem to see any of the bad. Kinda like when you hold your new baby for the first time, all the pain and hard times you had in the past ninie months are gone and the reward is there before you. What a privilege it is for me to be the portrait artist they have chosen to record their childrens lives.

I shot Cassidy's senior portraits in St. Augustine as part of a seminar I taught to eight other photographers. We had a blast touring the city in and out of back streets searching for hidden treasures. Cassidy was up to the role and hung in there like a trooper. I been their family photographer for about 12 years. she is such a godly young lady! When she was little i tried to get her to smile by telling her not to look at my bald head.
